YEAR 1 – LONDON’S BURNING!

Our Year 1 children have been enthralled with our Great Fire of London topic. Today recreating their own Great Fire of London – LONDON IS BURNING!

Both Class 3 and Class 4 have been combining their History and Design and Technology skills to design and build their own models of houses from the 1660s. They have explored how homes were constructed during this time, learning about the materials used—such as wood and thatch—that made the houses more vulnerable during the fire. They built models that reflect what homes in London might have looked like – with some amazing HOME creations too!

This project has not only deepened their understanding of a key historical event but also encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.

YEAR 1 HAVE BEEN DESIGNING AND BUILDING GREAT FIRE OF LONDON HOUSES!

As part of our exciting Great Fire of London topic in Design and Technology, Year 1 children have been busy designing and building their own houses! They’ve explored what homes looked like in London during the 1660s and learned how the materials used at the time contributed to the spread of the fire.

Using their creativity and problem-solving skills, students have designed houses, considering how to make them strong and safe. They’ve used a variety of materials, from cardboard and paper to paint, to build models of their houses. This hands-on project has not only helped them understand history but has encouraged teamwork and also explored our Penpol value of CREATIVITY, all while having fun learning about the Great Fire of London!

Reading and Writing is Magic, and Magic is for Everyone

Our annual Reading and Writing Is Magic Festival has been nothing short of spectacular, filled with fun activities, challenges, and a whole lot of creativity! This week, we’ve been celebrating the life-changing power of reading and writing in every corner of the school, inspiring everyone at Penpol to embrace their imagination and explore the magic of words.

The key theme of the week was ‘Reading and writing is magic, and magic is for everyone’ — a message that has resonated throughout every activity. We’ve focused on the idea that every child has the right to…

  • Be creative
  • Have a planet to read and write on
  • See themselves reflected in a book
  • Have some choice in what they read and write
  • Read and write for the joy of it

We had the privilege of hosting Cornish writer Ben Rowswell, who led energetic and inspiring assemblies for all year groups. His passion for storytelling was contagious, and everyone was excited to tap into their own creativity. You can learn more about Ben and his work here: Cornwall Adventure.

To keep the creative spark alive, every child has been given their own special notebook — a place where they can write freely and express their ideas throughout the year. It’s a space for independent creativity, giving each child the chance to freely write for the joy of it.

At Penpol, we believe reading and writing are truly magical, and this festival has been a perfect reminder of how important and exciting these skills are. Here’s to many more adventures with books, stories, and the endless possibilities of writing!

Year 1 – Maths in the Class

In Year 1, we love exploring different areas of Mathematics in fun and creative ways. Here are some photos of the children thinking outside the box to make their own number sentences and using various resources to help them learn.

We also enjoy getting up and being active to support our learning! This helps us to use our reasoning skills and strengthens our fluency by embedding it kinestetically.

Bright Smiles Ahead: Year 1 Learns the Secrets to Healthy Teeth!

Year 1 had a fantastic time learning all about how to keep our teeth clean and healthy, thanks to the brilliant team from Healthy Cornwall and NHS Dentistry! We discovered the best ways to brush our teeth and learned how much sugar is hiding in some of our favourite drinks. It was a fun, interactive workshop that helped us understand how important it is to look after our teeth every day!

Thank you so much Healthy Cornwall and NHS Dentistry!

A FIERY VISIT: FIREFIGHTERS BRING SAFETY AND FUN TO PENPOL SCHOOL!

Year 1 had an exciting visit from local firefighters as part of our Great Fire of London topic! The children explored how firefighting has changed since 1666, comparing the tools and techniques used in the past to the modern equipment firefighters use today.

Through cross-curricular learning in English, the children wrote their own interesting questions, such as, “What equipment do firefighters use to put out fires today?” and “How do firefighters stay safe?”

This visit provided a hands-on experience, helping the children connect their History and English lessons with real-life firefighting practices. The firefighters also explained the purpose of the equipment, sparking curiosity and deepening the children’s understanding of both the Great Fire of London and how we stay safe today!

360° – Year 1’S NATURE ART

Year 1 have been to Gwithian beach for part of our 360° Curriculum to explore NATURE ART!

As part of our ART lessons, Year 1 children went on a fun trip to the beach to create artwork inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy. They explored the beach and collected natural materials like shells, pebbles and seaweed. Using these items, the children made their own special art pieces, arranging them into patterns, shapes, and sculptures just like Goldsworthy does.

This activity helped them to channel their Penpol value of CREATIVITY while working with nature, and they learnt how to make art from things they found around them. The best part was that their artwork was temporary, just like Andy Goldsworthy’s, and they took photos to remember their beautiful creations!

A Delicious Apple and Blackberry Crumble Creation!

Year 1 went on an exciting blackberry walk to hunt for the juiciest blackberries, ready to add the perfect touch to our apple and blackberry crumble! After gathering our tasty ingredients, we got busy chopping, mixing and baking to create our scrumptious treat. Once the crumble was ready, we couldn’t wait to taste it – and everyone agreed, it was absolutely delicious!

But the fun didn’t stop there! In our English books, we wrote step-by-step instructions on how to make our apple and blackberry crumble, sharing our cooking skills with others. We also used our Design and Technology books to evaluate how well our crumble turned out.

What a tasty and creative way to learn!

YEAR 1’S FLUTTERING FUN: DISCOVERING THE BUTTERFLY LIFE CYCLE!

In Year 1, we’ve been extremely fortunate to have a lovely parent take some amazing photos for us, documenting the life cycle of a butterfly. OF COURSE, when Macie’s mum offered to let us release the butterflies at school, we excitedly said, “YES PLEASE!”

The children have been absolutely fascinated watching the stages of the life cycle come to life through informative videos and photos. This was a fantastic opportunity to bring our Science lessons of life cycles into the classroom and connect them to real-life experiences. A big THANK YOU to Macie and her mum for making this wonderful experience possible!
