As part of this terms Geography topic, ‘Coasts and Oceans’, year 2 spent a lovely day at North Quay beach.
After walking to the beach, in the lovely sunshine, the children spent the day sketching the beautiful scenery, recording physical and human features and also creating a selection of sand sculptures.

Keira, from Class 3
Keira loved making ’arrays’ for multiplication with Mega blocks and using part-whole to multiply. Keira explored measuring practically with her first attempt at making pasties – they look delicious!
Her favourite place to watch TV is now hanging upside down and swinging on her Dad’s pull up bar! Keira practised writing her full name in the sand during her daily exercise time!
Alice, from Class 3
Alice joined in with her brother’s home-learning challenge of finding facts on his favourite animal. Super drawing and facts Alice!
Alice’s papa built a pond in the garden that her and brother have been using as a paddling pool while there’s no fish in there. She also planted some plants for our ‘How does Your Garden Grow?’ topic and did some practical measuring during baking…which Alice loves doing!
Henry, from Class 4
Henry has been working hard writing using his adjectives. He and his brother, Arthur, have been printing with lego and creating space pictures. Super work!
Isla, from Class 3
Isla mixed exercise and phonics by reading red and green words in a game of hopscotch. She also enjoyed playing memory games in the sun! Isla then created super stretchy noun phrases using ‘ee’ sounds! Well done for remembering a comma between the adjectives too 🙂 Isla then wrote a lovely letter to Betty and made a raft … I can’t wait to hear whether it floated! Fingers crossed it did!
Violet, from Class 4
Violet has been so busy at home! She has been creative by making a picture frame and painting eggs for Easter. She has been helping her daddy feed the donkeys at his work and baking some delicious flat breads and hummus for lunch! She has also been out in the garden bug hunting! Well done Violet!
Elliott, from Class 3
Elliott has enjoyed making ’stretchy sentences’ to create noun phrases as well as grouping for multiplication. He’s also written and email to his uncle and sorted animals. Well done Elliott!

Harrison made a Jet pack with his dad on Tuesday 🚀 He also went for a walk and drew a heart and said thank you to the NHS. He also practiced writing his name in a different way. On his walk he collected lots of leaves and twigs and nature items to make things. He made a H for Harrison.

We went on a bike ride, Harrison is fantastic at riding his bike, using his breaks and we even went on the road in places. Learning all about road safety, what side of the road we should be on, keeping to the side, slowing down at a junction and wearing his helmet etc. Today we have been extending sentences, whilst talking about our dog 🐕 ……

Merryn, from Class 4
Merryn has been super busy over the past few weeks. She has been baking, painting and writing letters to cheer up patients in hospital who are missing their families. She has been getting creative, making lots of pictures with her sister and has been keeping an eye on the tadpoles in the stream to watch them grow! Great work, Merryn!

Ebbie enjoyed an egg hunt over Easter and had a great time splashing in the sea during her daily exercise.
Ebbie’s Daddy is building a barn and Ebbie likes to take lunch to him and help him dig.
She has also written a letter to her nanny to see how she is – it’s important to keep in contact with your family and friends as everyone is missing each other!

My daily exercise / weekly food shopping has been on my bike.
My thoughtful family surprised me with an egg hunt in my garden for my birthday and socially distanced deliveries from friends and neighbours arrived throughout the day! Don’t worry – my family used the visit as their daily exercise and left before I went out to do the hunt! Thank you Reuben (my nephew in Class 4).

Miles, from Class 3
Every Friday Miles’ family have a themed day and the children make flags from a chosen country and they cook/eat food from there for breakfast, lunch and dinner too! So far they have had Italian Day (pizza) and American Day (burgers and donuts) – What a fun idea! Whilst cooking, Miles explored capacity by spooning water into various sized glasses with a spoon.
Miles has been practising spelling the days of the week, using capital letters and his neatest handwriting. He focused on ascenders and descenders (tall letters on the line and long letters below the line).
Miles showed his super writing by retelling the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’. Great use of the conjunction ‘and’ as well as commas in a list. also wrote some questions to post to his friend James.

Ebon, from Class 3
Ebon has been making the most of the sunshine to start our new topic ‘How does your garden grow?’ by planting his own seeds. He also wrote the recipe and helped the adults with measuring and cooking. It was lovely looking at the way you have been using your daily exercise time Ebon.
Poor Ebon fell and broke his wrist. Our thoughts are with him and I hear he’s been incredibly brave!

Harrison, from Class 3
Today Harrison has been very creative and made some fairy houses out of plant pots.
Harrison has been practising using capital letters and question marks by writing questions for their family and friends.
Harrison watched toy story, he then answered questions on the film and rang his nanny describing the film and seeing if she could guess what he had been watching. Harrison also went on a nature walk and wrote about what he had seen using commas in a list.

Harley has been practising using capital letters and question marks by writing questions for his family and friends. Harley chose to measure practically when baking a crumble – it looks like he enjoyed it!
Harley loved the kitchen science investigation where he explored mixing bicarbonate of soda with kitchen ingredients. Luckily he did this outside as there was quite an explosion. I was lucky enough to see the video.
Class 3, would also like to wish Harley a very happy birthday and we all hope he had a great day!
Elliott, from Class 3
Elliott has been making the most of the sunshine to start our new topic ‘How does your garden grow?’ by planting his own seeds, designing a garden and writing a list of what he would like in it. He has also been exploring and describing materials.

Year 6 had the pleasure of welcoming Andrew for Aspdens, our school catering provider, this week. He spent the session talking to the children about cooking safety; origin of ingredients; the importance of understanding where our food comes from and how for it has traveled; and the benefits of a healthy diet.
As our Year 6 classes have been studying the Ancient Mayan Civilisation we decided to have a go at cooking some less traditional Mayan, but more delicious Mexican dishes. The children had to peel, dice, slice, grate and mix avocado, tomatoes, garlic, onion, fresh chilli and coriander to create both a spicy salsa and a cool guacamole before enjoying both with some home made tortilla chips Andrew prepared in the school kitchen before hand.
Some children were braver than others but lived to regret their choices when underestimating the strength of fresh chilli. Many of the flavours that Andrew introduced were unfamiliar to the children on their own, of course they had been exposed to them in other dishes but not many had eaten a coriander leaf on its own. It was not only interesting to see some off the children’s faces when tasting some of the ingredients but to hear the sensible conversations they had with each other about the different tastes the tongue can sense.
With more salsa and guacamole than tortilla chips our creations were sent to the school canteen for children to enjoy with their fajitas, which were on the menu for the day.
Each half-term, students from Classes 11 and 12 have written a letter or email to a penpal in France. The aim of the French penpal exchange, which has been running successfully for over two years, was for our students at Penpol to better understand the similarities, as well as differences, between school life in France and at Penpol. This opportunity also offers a platform for our students to use their French for a real purpose, being able to ask their French counterparts any questions they may have about life in France.
As Year 5 have recently been studying reflexive verbs to say what they do on a daily basis, the first series of questions sent to France were based on what time their French penpal got up, started school, finished school and how much homework they received. The responses from the French students provided plenty of discussion. Did you know that French students start school at 8.30am and don’t finish school until 4.30pm? However, though the school day is longer on most days, children in France only have a half day on Wednesday, followed by the afternoon off school to take part in extra-curricular activities.
As well as sending emails, which is first drafted in their books, then sent on to France, the children have also received and sent festive cards.

Before being beaten by the weather, Class 6 had a great time exploring in the sand, rocks and sea. The children were so excited to find a crab and with a little bit of help from Hazel, managed to find its way back to the sea.
The children enjoyed walking across the causeway and heading up the steep path towards the castle. After visiting the inside of the castle the weather deteriorated very quickly and sadly the children had to make a very quick return to the mini buses. All of the children from Class 6 demonstrated great stamina and perseverance against heavy rain, hail showers and a biting cold wind. As their Class Teacher, I am extremely proud of all of them!
Class 6 travelled back in time last week when they visited The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, to hear all about the Titanic and how she met her fate by striking an iceberg.
The children enjoyed meeting the Captain Edward John Smith, dressing up as survivors, making their own sailing boats and having time to explore other areas of the museum.

Class 1 and 2 have had another amazing trip to Feadon Farm. We learnt all about our British wildlife through the Gruffalo story and got the opportunity to meet the animals in the story and many more that we are likely to meet in our countryside.
I liked the fox kissing me on the nose best. We learned they won’t bite us and we can’t touch one in the wild – Faith Class 1
After reading the Gruffalo story we met the friendly foxes Todd, Meadow, Copper and a new friendly fox cub. The children learnt some interesting fox facts, fed them some treats, were able to stroke them and some lucky children even had a kiss on the nose from Todd.

Next we met the beautiful barn owl. The children took it in turns to hold him then watched him fly silently through the air over their heads. Chunk, the eagle owl also came out to say hello.
Next we met the corn snake and learnt about how we have 3 different types of snake in the UK all with their own way of killing and eating their prey. The brave children took it in turns to hold or stroke the snake. He loved to slither around the children’s necks or under their arms where it was nice and warm.

We learnt about the reindeer next. The children learnt that they can withstand temperatures of minus 50 because their have a kind of antifreeze in their legs. We heard the click of the reindeers feet as they walked which helps them to identify other reindeer from predators in places with low visibility and we learnt that they shed and re grow their antlers once a year.
We also got the opportunity feed some chickens and goats. We learnt that goats have such big tummies because they eat lots of grass. The grass goes into the first chamber of the stomach to ferment then the goat will bring back up the grass and chew again into smaller pieces which will then back down to be digested in their 4 stomachs.
I liked feeding the goats because I love goats. It tickled my hand when they ate the food – Hunter Class 2
My favourite bit was when we feed the chickens, the white part of the egg turns into a chicken – Bella Class 1
We also got to see some squirrels, hawks, adders, stoats, mice, ferrets, weasels and hedgehogs. We learnt all about how the hedgehogs have reduced in numbers in the last 20 years from 36 million to 1 million. We learnt how to make our gardens more hedgehog friendly by making sure they have access, leaving a parts of the garden slightly wild, leaving food and water for them and making hedgehog homes for them.
The children were really excited to finally meet the Gruffalo, he was shy and hid in the woods. We did manage to get a friendly wave from him as he was more scared of us than we were of him.

Feadon farm is hands on, fun, fascinating and an unforgettable experience for the children. The wildlife experts, Gary and Kirsty were incredible. Their enthusiasm and knowledge made the whole experience so interesting which is why its one of the best educational and fun school trips we go to year after year.
What an amazing day. The children were in their element on their fun filled, action packed day of excitement, thrills and frolics on the beach.
Ben and Kate Holtaway had planned a full day of surf lifesaving activities and games for the children to enjoy. They were both fantastic with the children and the day ran effortlessly from one fun activity to the next.
The morning started in the surf life saving club where we learnt about beach safety, the equipment used by the life guards, the role of the life guards and where is safe to swim on the beach. The children had fun dressing up as naughty tourists and life guards and role played swimming in the wrong area of the beach and saving each other.
Next it was down to the life guard hut to meet the very funny lifeguards. They told us all about what they have to do each day and answered all our questions about their fun and exciting job. We learnt that they had even rescued 3 boats that morning. We also had a go on their rescue surf board.
After the life guard hut it was a picnic on the beach. The moment we sat down to eat our lunch the skies cleared and it was beautiful sunshine.

After lunch it was surfs up. The children were amazing on the surf boards and loved catching a few waves.

After the surf it got competitive on the beach with a few team games and the exciting game of flags.
Next we found a message in a bottle from Captain Smellybeard with a treasure map inside. It led the children to a pirates cave, where we found some hidden delicious treasure, the best kind of treasure.

Class 4 are starring in their own film! We have been making a promotional video about why Hayle is the perfect holiday destination. On Tuesday, we all set off for a very long (and very hot) walk all over town. Our first stop was the harbour, where we stopped for a snack and a chance to soak up the view.
We decided to take our playtime on the beach and had lots of fun paddling in the water. We continued our journey along St George’s walk, where we met a lovely lady called Sandy, who explained all about the bug mansion, the woodland walk and the sensory garden.
Then it was on to the skate park for some more filming and a spot of lunch. We finished off the day with a delicious ice cream at Mr B’s.
The children had all been given destinations that they had to talk about on film. They did an absolutely fantastic job. Our day trip out and our short film has inspired the children to do lots of high quality writing using interesting adjectives and verbs in our literacy lessons. They have also produced lots of excellent work in our science, geography and art lessons as well.

For our topic of Weather Around The World, Class 8 have visited Australia. We found out about the climate there and studied some of the Aboriginal culture: Dream stories and artwork. Inspired by some of the pieces that we had studied, the children set about designing and drafting their own animal based picture in the aboriginal style.
I loved looking at all the different pieces of aboriginal art. I especially liked finding Australian animals. – Harry
We then painstakingly completed our final pieces with acrylic on paper, dot by dot by dot! The animal designs were made first using paint on black paper. We then used white paper to make our backgrounds. We had to choose colours that complemented our animal designs so they stood out. To create our dots, we used cotton wool buds liberally loaded with paint and carefully applied onto the paper.
