Sports Day Fun in Reception

Class 1 and 2 sports day is an annual event which is held in June each year.  All of the children in the Reception classes loved encouraging each other during their races and both parents and guests were invited to come and support.  The atmosphere was great with all of the participants having a wonderful time taking part in the races. The encouragement and support from the parents was amazing as we had parents, Grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends shouting encouragement from the side lines.

The children engaged in the spirit of the day to join in with the old favourites like the egg and spoon race and the sack race. The team games consisted of the bean bag game, the dressing up and the kings breakfast.

I liked the dressing up race best because that was very funny because Finley had some dress on him and it was so funny and there was something funny about it – Hana Class 1

I liked the running race because I love running – Lucas Class 2

The toddlers race was a bit of fun and the children in Class 1 looked after their brothers and sisters and ensured they passed the finishing line together.

The running races proved to be a favourite with the children and crowd. It started with the boys race, followed by the girls race. Finally came the mixed girls and boys race which provided great excitement for the crowd.

I liked the sack race best because you got to go into sacks – Rosie Class 2

The sports day was a great success. The children showed a great team spirit towards each other and cheered along with the crowd to support their friends.

I liked the kings breakfast race. We put a circle on our heads that was a crown, we carried breakfast. It was fun – Emilija

A well deserved ice cream to finish.

Well Done Class 1 and 2.

Class 12 create their own E-Safety animation!

Over the last few weeks Class 12 have been building upon their knowledge learnt from their Online Safety lessons and have taken it upon themselves to share what they have learnt from the Be Internet Legends program with others.

In order to accomplish this they have worked in groups to create their own animation, based around the Be Internet Legends concept.  By writing their own dialogue and designing their own cartoon character, the children have created a short movie which you can enjoy below.  The animation itself has been created in a clever program called Adobe Character Animator, a piece of software which allowed the children to animate every aspect of their characters, from their eyes to their toes!

So, sit back, relax and enjoy Class 12 talking about how to become Internet Legends!

As well as this lovely animation, the other Year 5 and 6 classes are also working on their own short films so check back soon to see those as well.

In the meantime here are some more stories about the children enjoying the Internet Legends program.

Investigative Maths taking place again in Year 6

The Year sixes have been investigating how to write algebraic sums in Maths this week, with a little help from some milk bottle tops and Harry Potter!!

The children had to make potions (P) made up of legs of certain animals, including spiders (S), bats (B) and lizards (L). To help with their learning, the bottle tops were used to represent the different animals in the potion. If they wrote the algebraic sum correctly (Mr Pollard’s potion needed a potion requiring 32 legs) it would turn the teacher into a frog! An example which Sammy developed was: 2S + L + 6B = P

I never really like algebra before, but now I feel more confident – Lilly

NB: No teachers were harmed in the making of this lesson.

Penpol French Café Video Montage – The Final Cut!

Pupils at Penpol have performed amazingly well in French this past term by showing that they can order food an drink in French.

All classes performed really well, using the key phrases “je voudrais” (I would like) and “s’il vous plaît” in order to order food and drink.

Check out the video below which gives you an overview of what they have all been learning recently, as well as showing how much they enjoyed this topic.  Bravo Penpol!

Penpol launch a brand new Community Choir!

We are very excited to let you know about a new event that will be taking place at Penpol School over the next 4 weeks. We would like to introduce the Penpol Community Choir, which will be held in our school hall between 4.15pm – 5pm on Thursday 14th, 21st & 28th June and Thursday 5th July.

The choir will be open to members of the Hayle community who would like to join us. We hope it will be a great opportunity for parents, carers, grannies & grandads and any local residents to come together and enjoy some great singing. No expertise is required, just the capacity to have some fun!

We ask that all children are accompanied by an adult – this could be a family member or friend. We would also be grateful if you could spread the word to other members of the community who would like to join us. The Community Choir is open to all – the more the merrier!

There will be a voluntary contribution of 50p per week, per family group and any funds raised will go towards other school community events.

We are really looking forward to starting the choir and to seeing many of you for the first session on Thursday 14th June.

Reception Visit The Seal Sanctuary

This week, the children in Classes 1 and 2 were very excited to visit the Seal Sanctuary in Gweek as part of our learning about ‘Under the Sea’. We travelled to Gweek on the school minibuses – our very first time on the minibuses at Penpol!

We visited all the different animals at the Sanctuary from seals to penguins to otters and sea lions as well. We learnt all about how the seal sanctuary has rescued 74 seals this year and how they don’t drink but get all the fluid they need from the fish. We also learnt that they can hold their breath underwater for 45 minutes at a time!

We loved visiting the Humbolt penguins and learnt they live in pairs and can live for up to 25 years! We liked seeing them swimming under the water.

We enjoyed having a picnic lunch and even had time to play on the pirate ship play area afterwards!

After lunch we walked down the nature trail to visit the otters at their home in Otter Creek. We loved looking out for all the animals on the nature trail and got to listen to lots of interesting facts about the animals on the way. We saw a bug hotel and talked about the insects that might live there.

We all had a lovely day at the Sanctuary and are eagerly looking forward to our next school trip!

Class 4 recreate the Great Fire of London

Class 4 have been learning all about the Great Fire of London this term.  To mark the end of their exciting project, the class gathered outside with their handmade London houses to understand just how quickly the fire spread through the city.

Alan started a small fire at one end of the row of houses and before long it had spread to the next house, then the next and then before long the whole of London was on fire!

Check out the video of what happened here:

Please remember that fire is incredibly dangerous and you should NEVER play with fire yourself.

Internet Legends Assembly with Google

This afternoon we had a very special assembly from Jenny and Daniel who came to visit us from Google.  They came down to Cornwall to visit a couple of schools and Penpol were one of the lucky ones chosen.

The assembly itself was linked to our recent work on how to stay safe online and in particular the Be Internet Legends program.  The assembly was a chance for the children to celebrate completing their lessons on e-safety and also a chance to experience the various characters and worlds from Interland come to life in the school hall.

Jenny and Daniel bought a whole host of exciting things with them for the assembly, including special hands for everybody to hold up and participate in the assembly with.  The hands were green on one side and red on the other, letting us answer yes or no to a number of tricky questions!  They also built a massive display in the hall to really get everyone in the mood to learn about e-safety.  Giant banners and flags lined every wall in the hall, surrounding us with the colourful characters from Interland.

Audience participation was very much key to this assembly and we all had a chance to get involved and shout out answers at the right times.  Daniel and Jenny guided us through the islands of Interland and this proved to be a fun and friendly look at some serious topics including cyberbullying, password hacking, identifying fake information online and sharing sensitive information on the internet.

Speaking to our visitors from Google before the assembly, it was clear that they were very impressed with our Computing lessons at Penpol – particularly the work we’ve all been doing recently on E-Safety.  Mr Woolcock and the special guests spoke at length about the animation project we’re working on with the Year 5s and 6s which links to Interland and they are both very excited to see the finished films in the next few weeks.

To complete an already fantastic afternoon, Jenny and Daniel also gave out certificates to every child to confirm that they are now Internet Legends!

Thomas in Class 7 enjoyed the assembly so much he went straight home and created these lovely posters featuring characters from Interland.  Well done Thomas, they are lovely!

Penpol have Sporting Stars in Gymnastics!

This week we’ve had some excellent news from Kiki, Myla, Zannah and Maizy who have all competed and won prizes in gymnastics.  Here they are talking about their wins in their own words…

Kiki (Class 7)

“I definitely didn’t think that I would win, but I was really proud when I did.” Kiki came first in her Gymnastics with her tumbling routine.

Myla (Class 3),  Zannah (Class 10) and Maizy (Class 10)

“There was a gymnastics competition and we had to learn three runs and we had to do them and the judges judged us.  There was sixth, fifth, fourth, third, second and first places.  We came fourth, fifth and sixth overall and have these lovely rosettes to show how well we did.  There were 14 people taking part so we were really excited to be in the top six.”

From the Computer Screen to the Real World

Over the past few weeks Taran has been helping run Computing Club along with some friends on a Thursday lunchtime.  Whilst there he’s been using his extra computing time to design and create a plastic storage unit for his tent on a program called Tinkercad.

When I first opened my tent I saw a very handy hook right in the centre.  I thought “that could have a hanging basket on it” but instead of designing one hanging basket I designed four and had them 3D printed out in the same colour they were on the computer.  I’m going to use my invention for general storage in my tent and I think it will be very useful. – Taran, Y6

He has measured, designed and refined his digital model to the point where he was ready to get it 3D printed.  It took nearly 14 hours to print all four parts of the model, but now it’s finished he’s delighted with the result.  He now has his very own, unique, storage solution for his tent.  Well done Taran, an amazing project.
