Year 6 try their hands at Mexican Cooking!

Year 6 had the pleasure of welcoming Andrew for Aspdens, our school catering provider, this week. He spent the session talking to the children about cooking safety; origin of ingredients; the importance of understanding where our food comes from and how for it has traveled; and the benefits of a healthy diet.

As our Year 6 classes have been studying the Ancient Mayan Civilisation we decided to have a go at cooking some less traditional Mayan, but more delicious Mexican dishes. The children had to peel, dice, slice, grate and mix avocado, tomatoes, garlic, onion, fresh chilli and coriander to create both a spicy salsa and a cool guacamole before enjoying both with some home made tortilla chips Andrew prepared in the school kitchen before hand.

Some children were braver than others but lived to regret their choices when underestimating the strength of fresh chilli. Many of the flavours that Andrew introduced were unfamiliar to the children on their own, of course they had been exposed to them in other dishes but not many had eaten a coriander leaf on its own. It was not only interesting to see some off the children’s faces when tasting some of the ingredients but to hear the sensible conversations they had with each other about the different tastes the tongue can sense.

With more salsa and guacamole than tortilla chips our creations were sent to the school canteen for children to enjoy with their fajitas, which were on the menu for the day.

Year 4 build LEGO robots to help save a stranded astronaut!

In a very dramatic turn of events, Year 4 pupils arrived into the Mac Suite this morning to discover that a situation had arisen overnight.  An intrepid LEGO astronaut had got himself into a spot of bother on the surface of the moon.

He’d unpacked his suitcase and was enjoying a warm drink in the Moon Base when he realised he’d left his Moon Rover back on Earth. Oh dear!  

To make matters even worse, ahead in the distance he could see two massive pieces of Moon Treasure that were too far away to reach on foot.

Thankfully, Classes 9 and 10 were on hand to help.  When faced with a challenge, these classes can always built a robot to help out!  So over the morning, both classes built, tested, refined and polished their Moon Rovers to help Astronaut Alan reach the treasure.  We had a variety of designs, a huge array of different programming styles and a lot of trips back and forth testing their creations.

But at the end of the morning, I’m delighted to say that Astronaut Alan reached the Moon Treasure and safely returned to his base – safe in the knowledge that the treasure was actually just two foam cubes with patterns on.

Mission complete!

Year 3 Create their own Winter Ornaments

This term children in Year 3 have been learning how to use the 3D design program Tinkercad.

They’ve learnt how to rotate, resize and combine objects into creative and imaginative shapes.

As well as this they’ve completed a series of mini-challenges to really test their digital building skills by creating 3D models of various objects using a very limited number of building blocks.

After these challenges the children set about creating their own design for a 3D Winter Ornament.  They were allowed to use two colours and used examples from last year as inspiration.

Everyone got the chance to create several different designs before choosing their favourite one to be printed.

Year Four Enjoy Romans

During December, year four children at Penpol school had a Roman Themed week. They did lots of activies like making and designing a Roman shield and film making.

On Monday The children made and designed a Romanshield out of cardboard Lula age8 said “It was very fun and interesting.” On Tuesday they made flat bread with honey and Sesame seeds.

On Wednesday, A Roman legionnaire came in hetold the children how to play Roman games like the Hadrian‘s wall card game and a Roman top trump game. Connor, age 9 said “It was scary and fun”.

On Thursday They had a dress up day they dressed up like Romans are using the shield to makea shield wall on Friday they madeMosaic me some coloured paper based on a template Ellie age 8 said.”It was great,”

It looked like year four had an amazing week, lucky them.

Year Four enjoy a Roman themed week

During the first week of December, year four pupils from Penpol School inHayle, had an amazing Roman themed week. The week was filled with lots of Roman activities from Roman shield making to filmmaking. The week finished with a dress up day and mosaic making.

On Monday, the children made fantastic Roman shields.First the children got two massive bits of cardboard then stuck them together and painted them.Then the children put  pieces of coloured paper into shapes and stuck them on.Bebe aged 8 class 9 thought making Roman shields was amazing .

On Tuesday ,the children tased Roman food.The children tased garum, vinegar ,honey and grape squashed wine. It sounds sickly.

On Wednesday, a Roman legionnaire came in to teach the children about life in Britain and Hadrian’s wall and what happened.

On Thursday, the children dressed up as Romans.the children made a Roman timeline animation. Lula aged 8 thought it was very entertaining.

On Friday, the children made Roman mosaics. They designed the mosaics, then got strips of paper and cut them in little squares to make an object out of the little squares.

The children made Roman shields, tasting Roman food, meeting a Roman legionnaire ,dressing up ,making an animation and a mosaic. The best one was making the animation. What an amazing topic! It sounds like year 4 are going to have many exciting topics to come in the future.

Class 6 get creative

As part of their English and art lessons,  Class 6 have been listening to the story ‘The Adventures of Egg Box Dragon’, written by Richard Adams. The children enjoyed listening to how the character, Emma, made her own dragon out of an egg box and then acknowledging the importance of writing a clear set of instructions for others to follow. The children had a great time planning and then selecting a variety of materials to make an Egg Box Dragon of their own.

 

Class 6 visit Tremenheere Gardens

At last the sun was shining and Class 6 were able to go on their educational visit to the Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, without wearing wellington boots, coats and hats. Whilst at the gardens, the children got to observe a variety of  sculptures and exotic plants, which they were then able to draw into their sketchbooks. The children also got to go inside the camera obscure, where they were able to see a 360 degree view of the gardens in a hypnotic and magical way.

Teamwork and Cooperation help Class 8 race to success with LEGO Race Cars

Year 3s have started using LEGO WeDo 2.0 robotics sets for the first time this week!  After much excitement and anticipation, Class 8 have been building race cars for their first project.  From building with LEGO bricks to writing the code on screen, the children have demonstrated fantastic teamwork and perseverance to overcome obstacles, locate missing pieces and connect the robots to their iMacs.

The key to success here was good teamwork and cooperation, something which Class 8 realised from the start.  Working in pairs they set about co-ordinating their approach so one had the instructions on screen whilst the other built the model, often switching roles as the process went on.  

In forty minutes we all had race cars built, but then it was time for the biggest challenge of all – getting the cars connected to the computers and moving by themselves!

Cooking with Chartwells an enjoyable treat for Year 5 and 6!

Last week, Year 5 and Year 6 were fortunate enough to have a cooking masterclass with Karen from Chartwells. After talking about cuisines and dinners from around the world and different types of foods it was over to the children to create some delicious, healthy food of their own, in the form of rainbow wraps.

They’re called rainbow wraps because there are lots of different coloured vegetables inside it to give it colour – Lily

Thanks to Karen for coming in, who will now be doing more cooking with the other classes in the school in the coming weeks.

Class 6 travel back in time

 

Class 6 travelled back in time last week when they visited  The National  Maritime Museum in Falmouth, to hear all about the Titanic and how she met her fate by striking an iceberg.

The children enjoyed meeting the Captain Edward John Smith, dressing up as survivors, making their own sailing boats and having time to explore other areas of the museum.

Robot Makers

For the last half term, Class 10 have been learning all about robots. They’ve looked at the developments of robots and even had a go at coding a Mars Rover Robot. At the beginning of the topic the class decided that they wanted to build their own robot. Class 10 spent a lot of time building electrical circuits and designing their robots. They have worked really hard and produced some brilliant models.
