Class 8 have made an Elephant inspired by Art from India

Class 8 have been learning about India for the last couple of weeks, including looking at some of the beautiful vibrant artwork that has been inspired by Indian culture over the years.

Having considered lots of examples and discussed the colours and shapes that make them stand out, we set to work designing our own colour scheme and patterns in Keynote.

Everyone created their own motif based on this theme and then we put them all together in one document to create that beautiful elephant you can see above.  Finally we used some of the animation tools in Keynote to make each design rotate slowly, creating the mesmerising colourful effect for our whole-class artwork.

Well done Class 8, it looks great!

The Sinking of the Titanic

 

During this terms History lessons, Class 6 have been busy learning all about the sinking of the Titanic. Whilst learning about this famous ship, the children  have  also been able to incorporate  DT into their learning  by creating their own moving picture that displays the Titanic colliding  with the iceberg. Some  children also decided to continue their learning at home by creating models, or paintings of the ship,  to share at their weekly assembly.

Etch-A-Scratch with Year 4

This term the Year 4 pupils are learning all about robots and their uses in the world.  They’ve been taking this learning into Computing as well and this week we’ve written programs to help us draw our very own robotic creations.

Using Scratch 3.0 the children have worked together to make a program which mimics a traditional Etch-A-Sketch, moving the pen up, down, left and right by using the correct blocks of code.

Here’s a few pictures of what their programs looked like, followed by a gallery of the Class 9 robots and the Class 10 robots.

To make their programs even better the children used the MicroBit as a remote controller, adding in pen up, pen down and clear screen functionality into their coding.

Have you seen an Egg Box Dragon?

During this terms English lessons,  Class 6 have been reading the story ‘The Adventures of the Egg Box Dragon’ by Richard Adams. Whilst listening to extracts from the story, the children have had the opportunity to read aloud,  visualise or picture a place from the story, plan procedural writing, perform a kenning poem about dragons and write a letter to the Egg Box Dragon asking for help. The children have also been able to incorporate this story into their DT lessons, by planning and creating an Egg Box dragon of their own.

Year 5 Mission to Space

Aliens…do they actually exist? This is a question which has been at the forefront of space exploration since the first human was launched into Space in 1961.  This question is precisely what Year 5 are in the midst of learning about, having started reading ‘The Jamie Drake Equation’, by Christopher Edge, this new term.

Year 5 have explored in Science the ideal conditions for Extra-Terrestrial life forms to exist in our universe, referred to in the book as the ‘Goldilocks Zone’.

The Goldilocks Zone is neither too hot nor too cold.

Once accepting the fact that our universe is incredibly vast, all students were in agreement that in some corner of our universe, life must exist.  With this in mind, both classes in Year 5 immediately began designing their own aliens in their French lesson, labelling and talking about them in French.  Each one of their creations have been unique in their own way, with exceptional use of French vocabulary which would be impressive even for a GCSE French student.

In Science and Literacy, we have also looked at different attributes which are essential in order to be an astronaut.  Year 5 students have completed their own mini astronaut application and were interviewed by their peers on why they would be the ideal candidate to send into Space on a mission to discover alien life form.

 

This week, Year 5 students will be finalising their applications and delivering a persuasive group presentation on why their group would be the ideal team to be sent into Space.  Year 5 students will also be interviewing a NASA employee via Skype over the next couple of weeks in order to find out more about what it would be like to work at America’s Space Agency.

Year 6 Evacuated Back To WW2

Nearly eighty years after thousands of children and young vulnerable adults were evacuated from cities across the country during WW2, our Year 6 children had a go themselves. To celebrate the end of our ‘Wartime Britain’ topic the children (and adults) dressed themselves in period clothing and lived the life pf an evacuee for the day.

After being collected from the gate by a member of the Home Guard, a U.S. Naval officer and our very own Land Girls they waved a teary goodbye to their parents before being subjected to a roll call and squeezing into a cramped school hall; much like the evacuees of 1939 would have been when they departed the trains.

I really enjoyed WW2 day, I loved making the food. It was great to have the opportunity to dress up in clothes that I borrowed from my Granddad! Throughout the day we had to hide under the tables when the air-raid siren went off, It was especially funny when the parents came in and had no idea what to do! – Jamie, Class 13

It was here the children had chance to act in character and meet their fellow evacuees, discussing the contents of their suitcases as well as their preferred destination. It was in the hall where the children also had to opportunity to look at some genuine WW2 artefacts including a British Army parachute, an army helmet worn during the Battle of Arnem and some U.S. Navy standard issue items.

Once the children had been sorted in the classes for the evacuation they had the opportunity to write a postcard home to their loved ones. The purpose of this was to reassure their loved ones of their safe arrival in the countryside.

For the remainder of the day the evacuees had the opportunity to create 2 pieces of artwork; one Blitz searchlight themed.

The children also tried their hands at some ration inspired baking. using a genuine ration recipe book the children worked under close supervision from the Land Girls to make bread and butter pudding. A dish very popular during the war as it used up many left over ingredients but also those readily available during the tough time.

Evacuee day was so much fun, my favourite part was making the origami spitfire! Closely followed by baking the bread and butter pudding. It gave us an insight into how people survived with rationing during the war- Abi, Class 14

At the close of the day the children were collected by their parents, their evacuation much shorter than those in the war. Many parents came into class to sample some of their cooking but also sit and enjoy their child’s work from the last term, with the majority of literacy and topic being based heavily

These day’s are brilliant, it’s great to see so many of the children and adults getting involved. It’s lovely to come in and look through my child’s work in the classroom as its not something I often get the opportunity to do. Thank you!- Parent

Christmas Scene Winners

This year the PFA once again ran a very popular Christmas Scene competition.  Children from every class in he school entered and the judges had a really hard time picking the winners.

Fantastic film making by Class 4

Class 4 are starring in their own film! We have been making a promotional video about why Hayle is the perfect holiday destination. On Tuesday, we all set off for a very long (and very hot) walk all over town. Our first stop was the harbour, where we stopped for a snack and a chance to soak up the view.

We decided to take our playtime on the beach and had lots of fun paddling in the water. We continued our journey along St George’s walk, where we met a lovely lady called Sandy, who explained all about the bug mansion, the woodland walk and the sensory garden.

Then it was on to the skate park for some more filming and a spot of lunch. We finished off the day with a delicious ice cream at Mr B’s.

The children had all been given destinations that they had to talk about on film. They did an absolutely fantastic job. Our day trip out and our short film has inspired the children to do lots of high quality writing using interesting adjectives and verbs in our literacy lessons. They have also produced lots of excellent work in our science, geography and art lessons as well.

Year 6 Create an Animation for Mr Doyle

Today was a very special day at Penpol – a day where we got to celebrate Mr Doyle and his 19 years at school, as well as a chance to wish him well with the next chapter in his life.

All of the children and staff got together in the morning for a very special assembly, where every year group presented Mr Doyle with something special for him to remember them by.  

Below is the video that Year Six worked on with Mr Woolcock, set to the tune of 500 Miles.  Each child has spent several weeks designing their own character in Photoshop, using nearly 30 different layers to allow the cartoon to become animated.  By drawing the different elements on different layers they’ve managed to create some truly unique characters!  They then got to grip with an amazing new program called Adobe Character Animator which is where the real magic happened.  Stay tuned for lots more animations from our Year 5s and 6s after the Easter break!
