Lizard Claim KS2 Sports Day Title

After a hotly contested series of events it was the yellow ribbon on lizard that was dropped across the handles of the House Trophy award the the highest scoring team on sports day.

The day kicked off with Year 3 and 4 trying their hands at a mixture of events testing their team work, welly-wanging throw, space-hopper bounce, hula-hooping hop and many other skills, before the traditional running races. The day then paused for lunch before it was the turn of the year 5 and 6 children.

The best part of the day for me, is always seeing the children giving their all for their house either by participation or encouraging others. Every single point gained by an individual contributes massively to their teams total- Mr Stanlake

The trophy was presented to Meghan and Finn, who represented Lizard as their house captains by Mr Chislett.

I am so happy we have won but also very proud to be the captain of my house- Meghan, Class 13

Music in the Marquee 2018: The After-Movie!

For the last in our series of three posts about this years Music in the Marquee, I’m delighted to share with you our official video of the event!  You may have seen Miss Clarey with her camera out all evening, getting lots of videos of everything that goes on at Music in the Marquee.

She’s taken all those clips and has made this incredible video to show you what the night was all about.  If you were there then try to see if you can spot yourself!

As always, the whole purpose of the night is to try and raise as much money for the PFA as possible.  I’m delighted to say that this year, our concert has raised £3903!!!

This year was the fourth Music in the Marquee and featured Ben Thorpe and DJ Flo Selecta as well as our headline act, Bradley Johnson.  Bradley actually flew in from Corfu especially to play at Penpol and then flew back out to Greece the very next day!  We’re delighted that he came all this way to see us.

Class 13 create their own E-Safety animation!

Over the last few weeks Class 13 have been building upon their knowledge learnt from their Online Safety lessons and have taken it upon themselves to share what they have learnt from the Be Internet Legends program with others.

In order to accomplish this they have worked in groups to create their own animation, based around the Be Internet Legends concept.  By writing their own dialogue and designing their own cartoon character, the children have created a short movie which you can enjoy below.  The animation itself has been created in a clever program called Adobe Character Animator, a piece of software which allowed the children to animate every aspect of their characters, from their eyes to their toes!

So, sit back, relax and enjoy Class 13 talking about how to become Internet Legends!

On Saturday night we welcomed back Bradley Johnson to Penpol School to play our annual Music in the Marquee fundraising concert.

Investigative Maths taking place again in Year 6

The Year sixes have been investigating how to write algebraic sums in Maths this week, with a little help from some milk bottle tops and Harry Potter!!

 

The children had to make potions (P) made up of legs of certain animals, including spiders (S), bats (B) and lizards (L). To help with their learning, the bottle tops were used to represent the different animals in the potion. If they wrote the algebraic sum correctly (Mr Pollard’s potion needed a potion requiring 32 legs) it would turn the teacher into a frog! An example which Sammy developed was: 2S + L + 6B = P

 

I never really like algebra before, but now I feel more confident – Lilly

From the Computer Screen to the Real World

Over the past few weeks Taran has been helping run Computing Club along with some friends on a Thursday lunchtime.  Whilst there he’s been using his extra computing time to design and create a plastic storage unit for his tent on a program called Tinkercad.

When I first opened my tent I saw a very handy hook right in the centre.  I thought “that could have a hanging basket on it” but instead of designing one hanging basket I designed four and had them 3D printed out in the same colour they were on the computer.  I’m going to use my invention for general storage in my tent and I think it will be very useful. – Taran, Y6

He has measured, designed and refined his digital model to the point where he was ready to get it 3D printed.  It took nearly 14 hours to print all four parts of the model, but now it’s finished he’s delighted with the result.  He now has his very own, unique, storage solution for his tent.  Well done Taran, an amazing project.

Year 6 become experts of the heart!

 

Last week, the Year 6 children were very fortunate as they were visited by three cardiologists, all experts when it came to matters of the heart. Eva Pring’s Dad was kind enough to support Mr Wise and Mr Pollard, who have been focussing on the human body in Science this term.
To support the class, a pig’s heart and an oxen’s heart were brought into class to see the similarities and differences between them, as well as seeing if there were similarities with our own hearts. The class looked at the different areas of the heart, as well as recognising what the aorta does and how blood flows through the heart from chamber to chamber.
It was a fascinating lesson and the children and  the teachers were all very thankful to Mr Pring and his colleagues for coming in and sharing their knowledge.

 

At first it looked disgusting, but once we started I found it really interesting – Darwynn

 

The cardiologists were all really nice people and they let us touch the hearts so that we could understand what the most important muscle in our bodies feels like – Lola

Penpol Do Cornwall Proud At South West Finals

The extraordinary season for the Penpol School football team continued this weekend as they represented the county at the ESFA Danone South West Primary Schools Finals.

Captain Dylan with the pendant presented to him for winning the County Championship.

Representing Cornwall, they played against fellow county champions from Berkshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Dorset. The standard of football was very very high and the team performed very well.

The results didn’t mirror the determination and effort put in from the boys as they lost their first two games 1-0. Heroic efforts from Caden in goal ensured that the score line stayed at 1-0.

The team began to grow in confidence and started to enjoy the day a little more, the second two games ended with Penpol on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline; with Charlie scoring both goals.

I for one am intensely proud of the team, their team spirit and effort cannot be questioned. They need to remember that they are still champions of Cornwall, a massive feat in itself- Mr Stanlake

Although the boys were initially disappointed however the realisation that they were representing every child who has played school football in Cornwall they left with their tired heads held very high indeed. A massive thank you to all of those who made the trip to offer support and join the 25 strong band of supporters.
