“Penpol pupils are curious, creative and courageous learners. Our school community believes in authenticity as the foundations of deep-rooted learning. Through our rich and relevant curriculum, we nurture community-minded, forward-facing international citizens of the future.”
The swimmers from Penpol enjoyed success in the pool at the Penwith School’s Gala a fortnight ago.
After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic it was wonderful to see a return to competitive swimming and boy did the children love it. Penpol topped the medal table finishing with 60 points over all; a monstrous 15 its above silver place.
All individual teams medalled as well with Yr 5 girls, Yr 6 boys and Yr 6 girls all picking up silver medals and the Yr 5 boys collecting gold.
The medal haul however wasn’t the most impressive outcome fore the day; that was the way in which the children carried themselves throughout the afternoon, showing exceptional levels of sportsmanship and fair play. They certainly did themselves and us as a school very proud.
Class 13 were the last in a long list of children to attend an introductory workshop at Hayle’s own Savvy Studios. Years 4, 5 and 6 have all had the opportunity to take part in two separate workshops; one lyrical and one contemporary.
At Penpol we pride ourselves on our links with local business and sports clubs. It has been difficult for both us and them during pandemic, but it was so lovely to get back out there and give the children these wonderful opportunities to try and experience different sports and hobbies.
The children were rewarded for their hard work and creativity with a flyer offering attendance at some trial classes; this is not only open to those who have attended but anyone who may be interested.
You can see the amazing work that goes on at Savvy by taking a look at their website. Parents, it is also her you can book some trial classes, with no pressure to sign up at the end!
On Thursday 23 children made the relatively short walk to Hayle Academy to take part in a coaching clinic with 4 Year 10 pupils from Hayle; 3 of which were ex-Penpol pupils.
The Year 6 pupils performed admirably, showing many of our school values; respect, integrity and resilience. For many, the toughest part was understanding the different roles for players in different positions.
Today, Class 9 took their Maths lesson outside and, it has to be said, they have embraced the outdoors despite the change of weather!
The lesson today was a recap of what they have been learning about this term – Place value. The students showed great teamwork and were able to confidently partition 4 digit numbers, as well as round their chosen number to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.
In addition, our Topic this term is ‘Romans on the Rampage.’ The class have been busy learning about who exactly the Romans were and what they have done for us. For DT, each of the students were tasked with creating a Roman helmet using paper mache, balloons, cardboard and, of course, the red and gold paint! This was a great success, with all students now learning Latin salutes in anticipation of a Roman Legion army drill in the coming weeks. ‘Dextrum sinistrum!
Finally, the good weather so far was not wasted, with many of our Guided Reading sessions taking place outside in the Gazebo and our first session of Tag Rugby taking place in glorious sunshine.
2020 brought around a slightly different kind of sports day. Over 100 of our pupils took part in first ever Rainbow games, both at home and in school.
The day consisted of children competing in for their houses in a range of throwing, jumping and running activities alongside some cross-curricular olympic themed activities such as designing/cooking a healthy meal; researching one of the continents; creating banner and posters to show their support for their house.
A brilliant event with many children engaging in the activities. Over 18000 points were shared between the 4 houses with less than 100 separating first and second.

A letter from Lola
Hi this morning Lola and her brother Caio went to visit their friend James who keeps Bees.
First we put on the Bee Suits so the Bees didn’t sting us and get into our faces. Then James lit some material to make smoke. So the Bees think there is a fire coming so they gather as much honey as they can and get ready to leave home, this makes them slower. We then looked inside the Bee Hive all the Bees flew out . We found some honey comb. Then we looked for the queen bee. She likes to hide in the dark. We knew she was the queen because she was quite big and fat compared to the other bees. Her job is to lay eggs and have babies. We saw the baby bees ,which are grubs and some eggs. The worker bees were busy looking after them. All the other bees look after the babies and they are all female. Some of the bees go out to collect nectar and pollen. We saw the yellow pollen on the bees legs. James was stood in the way of the bees entrance and he had thousands on his leg! When we put the hive back together and walked away the bees stopped flying around us.

Thomas, from Class 3
I have had a nice week at home and have been enjoying, writing, maths and reading. I have started writing the days of the week and months of the year using my phonic cards to learn how to write each letter.
I have also been reading Jack and the Beanstalk. Mummy and I have planted our own beans to see if they will grow. I also had great fun making my own Giant’s castle and learning about the 2D shapes that we used to build it.
