Penpol pupils are curious, creative and courageous learners. Our school community believes in authenticity as the foundations of deep-rooted learning. Through our rich and relevant Religious Education curriculum, we nurture community-minded, forward-facing international citizens of the future, who develop respect and tolerance in a diverse world.
The principal aim of Religious Education at Penpol Primary School is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living. Religious Education helps children to find out what people believe and what difference it makes to how they live. Religious Education helps people to make sense of different religions and beliefs, whilst also enabling them to reflect on their own ideas and ways of living.
The world in which we live is changing rapidly; we cannot begin to predict the nature of roles and lifestyles our pupils will enjoy in the future. We can be certain, however, that a broad range of skills and dispositions in Religious Education will be required, alongside a well-connected bank of knowledge, in order for them to develop respect and tolerance in a diverse world. We understand that 95.7% of Cornish residents identifying as either White British or White Cornish, therefore it is essential to teach children Religious Education so children gain knowledge on a range of religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism). This will help children to appreciate and respect the cultural diversity that Britain and the wider world have to offer and gain an understanding of the British value ‘Mutual respect & tolerance of different faiths and beliefs’.
At Penpol Primary School, we follow Cornwall Agreed Syllabus. This also incorporates a Cornish aspect, which enables children to explore the rich spiritual and religious heritage of Cornwall and the relevance of this for people in Cornwall. We teach Religious Education through an enquiry-based approach which helps engage and develop curious learners. Each term, children will explore a different key question that covers a different aspect of the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus. Children will be able to make sense of belief, understand the impact and make connections throughout each key question. We aim to teach Religious Education through cross curricular links and bring the subject alive through creative experiences. Teachers have the flexibility to teach RE through weekly timetabled lessons, RE days or RE weeks or a combination of the three models.
Religious Education allows children to explore provoking, challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. Children understand a range of religions and beliefs locally, nationally and globally through discovering, exploring and considering different answers to these questions. Pupils are able to learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights in response and to agree or disagree respectfully. Overall, Religious Education equips children with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and beliefs, enabling them to develop their ideas, values and identities. This will allow children to participate positively in our society with respect for cultural diversity.
