¬ŅHablas Espa√Īol?

The answer to that question before half term for almost all members of staff at Penpol, including languages co-ordinator Mr Emery, was a resounding ‘no!’ or perhaps a meek ‘un poco’.¬† However, if you were to now ask that question to most of the KS2 staff and teaching assistants at Penpol, you would be met with the confident reply ‘si! Me gusta hablar en espa√Īol!’

Over the half term break, 8 members of staff from Penpol took part in an 8 day immersion course in Santander, Northern Spain.  The trip was only possible after Penpol School was successful in gaining funding from Erasmus+, which is the European Union programme for education, in July.  Penpol are now on a two year journey to further enhance the language teaching at Penpol by allowing staff to develop their professional practice, build relationships with international peers and gain fresh ideas from language learning experiences in Spain and France.

The shoes were on the other feet for the teachers of Penpol, with intense but immensely enjoyable 3 hour daily Spanish lessons with experienced and fully qualified Spanish teachers.

 

It was a really invigorating feeling being a student again in a classroom.  Mr Pollard, Class 11 Teacher.

From learning the basic phrases such as ‘¬ŅComo te llamas?’ on day 1, staff completed the week learning the verb conjugations for regular and irregular verbs, as well as regularly conversing in practice role plays in class.¬† The lessons were hugely rewarding and by the end of the week, all staff had grown in confidence ordering in restaurants and even conversing in Spanish with locals.

Aside from the daily lessons, the days were also packed with challenges which were not too dissimilar from BBC one’s show ‘The Apprentice’.¬† On the first day, staff had to explore the city by foot and find out important facts, cultural information and even learn a joke from a local.¬† There was also a night of learning how to dance, Flamenco- style, to the delight of Mr Peck!¬† There was also plenty of time to enjoy the delights of Santander, such as the Palacio de la Magdelena, the stunning local beaches and experience the plethora of Pintxos (tapas-style dishes) on offer across the city’s many restaurants and bars.

 

The week was testament to Penpol’s enthusiasm for languages and, after an action-packed week, each member of staff not only graduated with flying colours but also came away with a lots of ideas to bring back into the classroom, as well as the confidence to teach Spanish in a fun and engaging way.

Year 5 Mission to Space

Aliens…do they actually exist? This is a question which has been at the forefront of space exploration since the first human was launched into Space in 1961.¬† This question is precisely what Year 5 are in the midst of learning about, having started reading ‘The Jamie Drake Equation’, by Christopher Edge, this new term.

Year 5 have explored in Science the ideal conditions for Extra-Terrestrial life forms to exist in our universe, referred to in the book as the ‘Goldilocks Zone’.

The Goldilocks Zone is neither too hot nor too cold.

Once accepting the fact that our universe is incredibly vast, all students were in agreement that in some corner of our universe, life must exist.  With this in mind, both classes in Year 5 immediately began designing their own aliens in their French lesson, labelling and talking about them in French.  Each one of their creations have been unique in their own way, with exceptional use of French vocabulary which would be impressive even for a GCSE French student.

In Science and Literacy, we have also looked at different attributes which are essential in order to be an astronaut.  Year 5 students have completed their own mini astronaut application and were interviewed by their peers on why they would be the ideal candidate to send into Space on a mission to discover alien life form.

 

This week, Year 5 students will be finalising their applications and delivering a persuasive group presentation on why their group would be the ideal team to be sent into Space.¬† Year 5 students will also be interviewing a NASA employee via Skype over the next couple of weeks in order to find out more about what it would be like to work at America’s Space Agency.

Penpol French Café Video Montage РThe Final Cut!

Pupils at Penpol have performed amazingly well in French this past term by showing that they can order food an drink in French.

All classes performed really well, using the key phrases “je voudrais” (I would like) and “s’il vous pla√ģt” in order to order food and drink.

Reception Show they have the ‘F(ran√ßais)’ Factor

This term, Reception have been learning about food and drink in preparation for their French café lesson this week.

The children were brilliant at recalling different foods in French, saying which colour they were in French and also singing a song about food. ¬†They also acted out the classic ‘le Bonhomme de Pain d’√Čpice'(The Gingerbread Man), with both classes joining in with the rhyme:

Cours,cours aussi vite que tu le peux. (Run, run, as fast fast as you can.)

Tu ne m‚Äôattrapas pas! (You can’t catch me!)

Je suis le bonhomme de pain d‚Äô√©pice. (I’m the Gingerbread Man.)

Classes 1 and 2 watched also got a taste of this week’s French caf√© lesson. ¬†They watched a short video of Classes 9 + 10 ordering food and drink in French and enjoyed the song so much they wanted to sing along.

Le petit déjeuner français!

Having the confidence to order food and drink in French is fundamental to anyone wishing to visit France.  This week, Year 4 completed their final lesson on the topic of food and needed to use everything they had learnt to order and serve food at a french café.

For one morning only, Classes 9 + 10 were treated to a French breakfast. They were able to sing a song in French (to the tune of a popular Taylor Swift song!), order food and drink in French and, of course, taste the foods typically associated with a French breakfast.

I was nervous ordering in French at the beginning but now I feel much more confident.  Summer, Class 9, Year 4

Every student had a go at both ordering French food, as well as serving. Both classrooms were buzzing with French language, such as “je voudrais” ( I would like), s’il vous pla√ģt (please) and the signature phrase “bon appetit” (used as a salutation to someone about to eat).

 

I definitely know how to order more in French next time I go to France! Oscar, Class 9, Year 4.

All of the students enjoyed the caf√© atmosphere and certainly took pleasure from tasting the French pastries on offer with a glass of jus d’orange or jus de pomme.

With the final term at Penpol School almost upon us, it’s the perfect time to reflect and evaluate on the year so far.

All students here at Penpol have one hour a week of French, as well as the opportunity of attending after school language club on Thursdays. Year 6 are currently involved in an email exchange with Octave Cazauvieilh, a primary school situated on the outskirts of Bordeaux in the South-West of France. We also celebrate students achievement in languages by awarding a Star of the Week badge in both Infants and Juniors.

Merci ma famille!

Class 8 have been enjoying sing-a-longs in French this term to help them learn key vocabulary on the topic of family.

So far, Class 8 can already say who is in their family, including pets, size of the family member and colour of their pet. Mr Emery has been really impressed with their enthusiasm during lessons, which is shown in their singing, classwork and homework.

The song for this week is a song which shows appreciation for the family (merci pour ma famille), as well as friends (mes amis). Each student drew and labelled each of their members of the family, which they then each held up for the song.

Next up for Year 3 will be the celebration of “P√Ęques”, which is the name for Easter in France.

 

French Email Exchange Excites Year 6 Students!

Year 6 Students at Penpol have begun to take part in an email exchange with a French primary school during Mr Emery’s French lessons. The students have already sent and received two letters each to a French primary school located 60 km outside of Bordeaux in South-West France.

Year 6 students wrote a quick introduction about themselves in French before Christmas to the French school, Octave Cazauvieilh. They were able to talk about their hobbies, saying what they like and dislike doing on the weekend. Every Tuesday, Year 6 students would hopefully await word from Mr Emery to see if there had been a response from their French pen-pals. After a few weeks, Classes 13 and 14 received their first responses from their pen-pals, which of course was written in French!

In the Spring term, Year 6 then wrote a description about what they look like, with a picture they drew of themselves. They also included extra details about their interests they wanted their French pen-pal to know about. Finally, they created a postcard to show off to their pen-pal the local area, with Godrevy and its lighthouse featuring prominently on most of the postcards.

Their letters were posted by mail this time and the French school were delighted with the response that had been sent from their Penpol pen-pals.

Most recently, Penpol have just received a Guess Who game. The game included a class photo of all the students in the French year 5 class, as well as a description of each one. Using the French descriptions of each student, Penpol’s Year 6 classes rose to the challenge.

 

It was great to try and work out who your pen-pal was from their descriptions and photo.  Juliette- Class 14

Fun was had by all and great progress was made on the current topic, All About Me.

I learnt lots of extra new words to try and find out which pen-pal was mine from the picture.  It was lots of fun!  Ines- Class 13

Class 4 light up Christmas with French and German songs

This half-term, Class 4 have been learning about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. For their concert in St Elwyn’s church, Class 4 learnt a French song with Mr Emery about the animals in the stable. The students were able to name each of the animals from the song in French, as well as ask the question, “do you have any pets” in French.

Students from class 4 have been really excited about performing French and German songs with their family watching.

Miss Ryan and Mrs Anthoney have also enjoyed teaching the children about animals in French, having produced a 3D animal display board in French in the classroom and testing their knowledge in the lead-up to Class 4’s Christmas concert.

In addition, Mr Jones has been teaching class 4 the heartwarming German song, O Tannebaum (Oh Christmas Tree). Class 4 lit up St Elwyn’s church with their own performance of the song in front of parents and families.

To finish off an exciting term for languages, Class 4 also sang both songs in front of the Christmas tree in the school hall, with class 5 watching as special guests.
